10 Easy Holiday Window Decorations to Bring Cheer to Your Home

Now that the holidays have arrived, it is time to start decorating your home. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and your home’s windows can become an expression of what makes you merry this holiday season with festive custom window coverings, blinds, shades, curtains, draperies, or other creative jolly holiday window treatments. Anyone can put their Christmas tree in front of a window, but we have put together a list of easy decorating ideas that are sure to put the “wow” in your windows and impress your holiday guests (including any visiting in-laws!)

  1. Bathroom Window Wreath. If you’re sprucing up every other window in the house, don’t forget the one in the most used rooms in the house – the bathroom! What better place to add a little seasonal cheer than your bathroom? To bring in the fresh scent of pine, grab a wreath from your local Christmas tree vendor. If pine’s not your thing, you can snag an inexpensive wreath from your local craft outlet or big box store that’s made of silk or other artificial materials that can hold up to the moisture all those holiday hot showers will generate.

  1. Hanging Candle Wreath. This is a great way to add both color and light to a living room window. Check out this easy tutorial on how to make a metal candle wreath. You can opt for electric, flameless candles to reduce the fire hazard, but if you use regular candles and decide to light them, you’ll need to remember to extinguish them when you leave the house or go to bed for the night.

  1. Magnolia Wreath Garland. This seasonal greenery makes a perfect indoor window decoration for your kitchen. Bring a warm and wonderful touch of the south to your house no matter where you celebrate with this beautiful magnolia leaf garland on the inside or outside of your windows. Joanna Gaines would be proud!

  1. 4. Festive Curtains. This is one of the best and easiest ways to completely change the look and feel of a room. Curtains are easy to change out, and just may prompt you to do a little late fall cleaning by washing your regular curtains before you change them back after the holidays.

  1. Hang Colorful Ornaments. Who said ornaments are only for the Christmas tree? Adding a few to your window wreath or making an entire wreath from extra ornaments is a fantastic way to add some holiday cheer to your window, and we say the more sparkle the better!

  1. 6. Holiday Window Banner. Say “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays”, “Feliz Navidad”, “Happy Hanukkah”, “Happy Kwanzaa”, or “HO, HO, HO!” in glittering gold or silver letters. String it together and hang it over a central window in your home to bring good cheer to all who enter.

  1. Noel Window Box. Do you already have window boxes framing the windows outside your home? Did you think the season for using them as a decoration had passed once all the summer flowers died! Think again – now is the perfect time of year to put them to use! Add fresh or silk poinsettias to give your exterior windows a festive flair. If you have shutters on the windows, incorporate them into your holiday design by adding evergreen boughs and/ or extra ornaments for an ultra-festive look.

  1. Snowflake hot glue window clings. This is a genius way to decorate your window with authentic looking snowflakes that peel off easily once winter has passed. Check out this super easy instructional video for how to make your own custom snowflake window clings. Use colored glue sticks from the craft store to add interest or sprinkle some glitter on your snowflakes before they dry. You’ll wonder why you didn’t think of this one yourself!

  1. Christmas Card Window Display. Wondering what to do with all those holiday cards? Why, decorate a window, of course! Create a garland out of some heavy twine, mini clothespins, and two cup hooks (one on either side of the window). No more worries about finding a place to display all that holiday cheer!

  1. Display a Candle or Lantern in Your Window. Do you know the history of the popular practice of placing a candle in a window at Christmas time? This age old tradition was brought to America by the Irish, who left the front door unlocked and the candle lit to guide Mary and Joseph to their home and let them know they were welcome. This tradition dates back to colonial times, when a candle was often placed in the window when a member of the family was away. The lit candle represented friendship, was a sign of good news, and served as a sign of welcome to others and a beacon to weary travelers. If you choose to place a candle or lantern in one or more windows, it’s a good idea to choose electric, flameless candles or use an enclosed lantern to protect against an accidental fire.

While all  these ideas are sure to update your space, nothing beats custom window coverings made just for you. • Thank you for the excellent job you did on our motorized blinds. I know the installation of our blinds at 15 feet plus wide was no easy task. We appreciate the extra effort you went to - great job. We would not be enjoying our great view of the mountains quite so much without the motorized blinds.

  • It took me about four years to convince my husband to go along with painting the cabinets. What really sold him on going for it was the awesome instruction we received from Amber & Brad at Shades of Amber. Amber and Brad are two of the nicest people I have ever met! They taught us so well how to use Chalk Paint, how to avoid some common mistakes and even helped us mix a custom color for our cutler’s panty. They are so incredibly kind and make sure that everyone has all the tools and help they need. I would not have had the confidence to do this huge project without the help of Amber & Brad. Shades of Amber gave us such confidence and shared exactly what we needed to start. I am so grateful for their kindness and patience with us!
